Orho-Agbarho, Delta State

Orho-Agbarho, often referred to as Agbarho is a town in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Agbarho Kingdom, a prominent entity within the Urhobo ethnic group. The Agbarho people speak the Agbarho dialect of Urhobo, which is the standard dialect for literacy in the Urhobo language.

Historical Background
The original city of Orho-Agbarho was established by ten leaders from different clans, including Eghwu (Ewu), Ughelli, Uvwiẹ (Ẹvwrọn), and Olomu. They built a town which they named Orho-Agbarho. Over time, internal strife led to the dispersion of the original settlement into the present-day towns of Agbarho.
Cultural Practices
The Agbarho people have a rich cultural heritage, with traditional religion focusing on the adoration of ỌGHẸNẸ (Almighty God), the supreme deity. Their traditional calendar, known as the Urhobo week, consists of four days:
- Edewo: Market day
- Ediruo: Religious worship day
- Eduhre: Day for marriages and other community activities
- Edebi: Ancestor veneration day
On Edewo and Eduhre, markets are held, and traditional religious rituals are performed.

The Agbarho people are predominantly engaged in farming and business activities. The kingdom is known for its rich cultural heritage and plays a significant role in the Urhobo ethnic group.

Agbarho has seen developments such as the establishment of schools, including Unity School Agbarho, Agbarho Grammar School, and St. Endas College Agbarho. The area also boasts a government-owned hospital located on the outskirts of the town. Additionally, there are several hotels catering to visitors’ needs.

The traditional leadership of Agbarho is vested in the Osuivie, who governs with the counsel of traditional chiefs. The Agbarho Urhobo Improvement Union (AUIU) serves as an administrative body responsible for development and policy-making within the kingdom.
